Hill Country Science Mill
Hill Country Science Mill, located in Johnson City, TX, opened for business in February 2015. Hill Country Science Mill is a fun, interactive learning environment offering hands-on science activities, technology-based exhibits, games and programs to “ignite the curiosity, ambition, innovation and problem-solving potential of the next generation through an innovative, immersive experience that enhances the community’s understanding of, and appreciation for, science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).” In its early development our firm worked with the organization to build a stronger board and advisory group. Late in 2015 it was time to search for its first Executive Director.
Lee+ Associates was hired to conduct the search on behalf of the Mill and started by interviewing board members and staff to learn of the characteristics and skills they hoped the new ED would bring to the organization. The search team of Marion Lee and Alexis Desela listened to input from the HCSM team to begin recruiting talented professionals for the opening by advertising the position, receiving and screening applications, interviewing top applicants, and recommending a final slate of candidates
What Lee+ Associates delivered:
The search team created a job description and prepared specific job-based, behavioral questions for candidate interviews. They wrote the advertisement for appropriate placement where qualified candidates could learn of the opening and collected, receipted and reviewed all of the applicant résumés. Finally, they selected the top candidates based on the preferred profile of the organization, conducted the interviews and recommended the top slate of candidates for the Mill’s board and staff. As part of the process, Lee+ Associates also performed appropriate reference checks.
A large pool of talented professionals applied for the position and Amy Hone, a former Chief Development Officer and Director of Development for Make-A-Wish Central & South Texas and former Director of Development for Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation in Kendalia, TX and Director of Development & Special Events for March of Dimes in Grand Rapids, MI was selected as the new Executive Director.
Bonnie Baskin, Ph.D., Executive Director of Hill Country Science Mill said of the search, “We could not be more excited and honored that someone of Amy’s experience and expertise has decided to join the Mill. Lee+ Associates is the best search firm with whom I have ever worked.”
